Hi Jen
As promised after my visit to see my Mum and Dad today I can answer one or two questions for you. I shall relay what they told me this morning but just bare in mind they are both in their late 80's so some details may be a bit muddled. You may already have some of the info so apologies if I repeat.
I can confirm it was Elizabeth, Clara's sister that adopted May. My Mum remembers their son Rodger, apparently Mum use to look after him when he was small. May went to stay with Mum and Dad a few times over in Gawcott, near Buckingham after her husband Horace died. Dad recalls driving May around the area, even as far as Banbury to find her suitable sheltered accommodation. They told me Horace had a heart attack whilst he was driving and died, May was a passenger. That must have been horrendous for all the family.
Mum and Dad remember Helen, Clara's daughter and Wally her husband (Walter) They seem to think they ran a shop/cafe or something. Am i right in saying your mother was Alice Maud Young who lived in London? Mum also mentioned an Irene who lived in Wheathampstead.
I would be very interested if you have any further info on the Chalkley side of the family, especially Clara's parents William Jonathan Chalkley and Elizabeth nee Palmer. Elizabeth's father Samuel seems to have been married twice to an Elizabeth Cotton and an ElizabethThreader but not sure about my facts. I do have a copy of William and Elizabeths marriage certificate if you would be interested in a copy for your records.
Mum has given me a copy of A Trio of Aunts to pass onto you so if you give me your address I am happy to put one in the post for you.
Hope I have filled in a few gaps for you and I will look forward to hearing from you.
A very Happy New Year to you
Love
Kathy
